Robert Leroy Ripley, artist, author, and radio broadcaster. Ripley sold his first drawing to Life magazine when he was only 14 years old! Ripley also a natural athlete wanted to live out his dream as a pitcher in the Big Leagues but he soon suffered an injury and broke his arm while playing his first professional game. After this tragic accident that would end his carrier as a baseball player, he went back to his first love being an artist. He would soon work for the San Francisco Chronicle as a cartoonist. Ripley created his first collection of odd facts and feats while working at the New York Globe in 1918. The editor wanted a title that would describe the incredible nature of the sporting feats. Believe It or Not!, the cartoon was an instant success. Ripley loved to travel the world over, meeting interesting and unusual people.
